Basic Facts

Stroke

Stroke is a "Brain Attack". It is a medical emergency. Call 911.

WARNING SIGNS (SUDDENNESS IS THE KEY)

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the leg, arm or face.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden trouble seeing.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Every 53 seconds someone in America has a stroke. About 600,000 Americans will have a stroke this year-and 160,000 will die.

Stroke is our nation's #3 killer and a leading cause of disability.
After the age of 50, stroke is the leading cause of epilepsy.

Epilepsy

  • Epilepsy impacts 2.3 million Americans of all ages; 2 million adults and 300,000 children.
  • 10% of all Americans will experience a seizure during their lifetime.
  • While most individuals can gain control of their epilepsy, in 25% to 45% of the cases the seizures resist control and it becomes intractable epilepsy.
  • There are approximately 180,000 new cases of unexplained seizures and/or epilepsy each year.
  • When seizures persist epilepsy becomes a formidable barrier to normal activities.
  • New medications, devices, and surgical approaches are ways of addressing epilepsy.
  • Epilepsy is a complicated condition that takes many forms. The types of seizure(s), their frequency, severity, and pattern, as well as the impact on the individual and his/her surroundings are varied.

A cure is at the of our mission.
